“Family values” is a phrase with a lot of resonance. At first glance it seems to have a clear definition: “stuff I like.”
But when you look more closely, it turns out to be fuzzier. What about the family down the street that doesn’t eat dinner together? Or the single mother who works two jobs and can’t afford child care? Are they bad parents?
If so, then how do we decide who’s bad and who’s good? What is the value that makes a family good? The fact that you’re all related? But what if your sister was a crackhead? Or your sister-in-law was a convicted felon? Do they get to be in your family but not in your “family values”? And what if there are no such relatives — how do people without any relatives get a place in the club?
And what about the most important thing of all, the thing that makes families function at all: does doing chores and not having sex with each other count as “values” or not?
These are hard questions for any ideology. If you’re determined to be consistent — if you want to say that every family has to behave exactly the same way or it isn’t really a family — then you’ll have
I grew up in the 1970s, and I don’t remember anyone talking about the importance of family. It was always just assumed to be important.
Today, however, we are told that it may not be important at all. For example:
The divorce rate is higher than ever; families have changed; traditional families are immoral; a child needs a stable full-time father figure; children are better off with their mothers; children are better off with their mothers and two female roommates who might or might not be lesbian lovers; fathers are unnecessary because they are no longer needed for protection or income; the only reason women had children in the past was to have someone to take care of them when they were old; young men will become violent if forced to live under the same roof with a woman they can’t marry; etc., etc., etc.
A healthy family is one that can deal with conflicts in a positive way. To stay happy, everyone should try to understand other people’s feelings and problems. It is important to be open and honest. If you have problems, don’t be afraid to talk about them.
How to resolve conflicts?
If the problem is not very serious, you can solve it by just talking about it calmly. If you have serious problems, you need to get help from a therapist or another person. This situation is better than keeping all your feelings inside.
You are not alone! Your parents are there for you and so are your friends. Don’t forget that everything will work out in the end!
Having a “healthy family” is not about being happy all the time. It’s about dealing with problems, which are inevitable in any family, by working together to find solutions that make things better, not worse.
We can’t solve all problems between us. Often we don’t know what the solution is. But we can always make things worse by not trying to work together.
